One of the best parts of going to school in Montreal, besides the quality universities, is the bars. If you come from the rest of Canada or the United States, the drinking age is 19 and 21, respectively. In Quebec the legal age is 18, meaning no more drinking in parks or your friends' houses. The following bars provide a good experience for you and your friends. Most of them are located near one of Montreal’s many universities, such as Concordia, McGill, and UQAM.

Moose Bawr

Moose Bawr is located near Concordia University’s SGW downtown campus at 1817 rue Saint-Catherine Ouest. A five-minute walk from Grey Nuns, Moose offers a great selection of beer and food. One of the bar’s best qualities is being able to order a glass boot of beer. The drinks on the menu are affordable and the bar has a lunch menu where everything is $4. They also provide free popcorn to help you soak up the alc. The bar is perfect for a casual midweek lunch or a weekend boozing.

Mad Hatter’s

Hatter’s is a cheap bar in downtown Montreal that has everything a student bar needs. Cheap drinks, plenty of seats, a couple of pool tables, and big block Jenga. Need I say more?

La Distillerie

Distillerie is a little further from the previous two and a little pricier too. Near UQAM, this bar specialises in cocktails. Despite being more expensive, the bar is worth it. Never a bad sign, there is usually a line outside on a Friday and Saturday night.

La P’tite Grenouille

In spite of the cover charge, Grenouille is a lot of fun. Located on St. Laurent, the drinks are cheap and there is a live band performing almost every night. On some nights they have promotions for shots and food. It is a great bar to go to with a bunch of friends as they do 25 shots for $25.

Brutopia

Located on Crescent street, Brutopia offers a wide variety of locally brewed beers. They have happy hour deals every day of the week on beer, cocktails, and wine. Every Sunday, the bar has an open mic night, and on Monday’s they host a trivia night.

McLean's Pub

This bar, close to the Scotiabank movie theatre on St. Catherine, is your old-fashioned Irish pub. The place offers beer, pool tables, and plenty of TVs to watch the game with your friends. If you feel adventurous grab a bunch of friends and attempt to drink their 10-litre tower of beer.
